Why relaxing is so important?

Relaxing CatAre you taking enough time to relax everyday? Have you calculated how much time you spend at work or studying, stuck in traffic, shopping, cooking, doing chores, etc? How much downtime do you think you have in between all of these activities?
On average, we spend 40-50 hours a week at work. That’s one third or more of our lives spent working. Downtime is the most imporatant thing to prevent sickness that can be caused from stress. You need some time to refresh your mind and relax your body.

Many people overload themselves with work, whether its taking too much on at once, or just purely working over-time….all the time. Even though alot of us are used to always meeting the needs of others, a boss or family members and feel guitly when they need time for ourselves to just relax, they still need to do it sometimes. Your mind and body are too important!!

Whatever it takes, make sure you make room for some downtime in between all your daily activites. Physically schedule some time into your calander, if thats what it take. Some people may feel a little lost or feel like they’re wasting time. They are so used to rushing around constantly doing things, that when they stand/sit still for 30 minutes or more, they feel guilty, like they should be doing something. Don’t worry if this sounds like you, I’ve been there and sometimes still feel it. You will get use to relaxing or “doing nothing” instead of doing work or chores.

Fill you downtime with anything you enjoy doing. Hobbies, watching tv, having a nap, meditating and even doing exercise. Exercise is a really good idea for; releasing stress, releasing endorphines and improving blood flow and blood pressure. Meditation is also great idea. Find a place where you feel comfortable to unwind, realx your whole body (from your head, right through to your fingertips and toes) and breath deeply. If you need help meditating, listen to a guided meditation cd or find a free track off the internet. In the coming weeks, I will also be posting an article about Meditation for Beginners.

Everyone needs a break. If you have any days of annual leave at work, use them!, even for a day to relax. If you don’t want to use a block of days then just take a day off from work at the begining or end of the week to make a long weekend. Even take a day off in the middle of the week to break it up a little. Annual leave is there for you to use, so make use of it.

Take a good break everyday to relax from a busy or stressful lifestyle, because your mental health is as important as your physical health, if not more important. If you need any more advice on how to schedule some downtime, email me or ask me below in the comments section. Have a very relaxing, stress-free day, starting today!!
