Omega-3’s are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are vital for innumerous functions within a human body. Studies show that according to the current eating habits, an average person’s diet lacks the required amount of omega-3 more often than not. The three most important fatty acids present in omega 3 are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Omega-3 is found in abundance in the fatty layers of all cold water oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, herring and sardines etc. In addition, nuts, cod liver, soybeans, algae oils and tofu are excellent sources of omega-3 as well. Research show that doctors recommend eating at least three servings of fish every week in order to fulfill our dietary requirements. As inflammation has a very negative effect on blood vessels, therefore omega-3 aids in improving heart health by reducing abnormal rhythms, build up in arteries and incidence of stroke as well as lowering blood pressure.
